Future Corps Project
"Hug A Bear" for Hugs Across America
The students, parents and faculty all shared in this Future Corp Project, "Hug a Bear." This organization reaches out to comfort children in crisis. In eight days, we were able to collect $925 which allowed us to purchase 185 bears for these children.
From the Hewlett-Woodmere Schools Spotlight newsletter:
Franklin first graders from Mrs. Doxsee, Ms. Patello, Mrs. Lacy and Mrs. Amer’s classes recently participated in the Hugs Across America program. Hugs Across America, an organization that was created soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, provides bears to children in crisis around the world.
These first grade classes collected teddy bears during the month of November, created gift tags to put on each bear and then gave each bear a great big bear hug to fill it with love before donating it to Hugs Across America.
This little girl, from the North Shore Nursery School, not only brought a very special bear to comfort the children of the tsunami but also drew a wonderful picture for them.
Joanna Lau, 3 yrs, of Roslyn Heights, New York drew this picture for the tsunami child victim who will receive her donated bear. Her mommy told her that there was a big accident involving the ocean which swept away many homes and made many kids very sad. Joanna asked her mommy to "buy a big brown teddy bear" to give to them. This picture is her version of a "giant teddy bear". She put a lot of heart into making it the best picture that she has ever drawn. She said, "This picture will make them feel better. I think they will like my picture very much." We certainly do... and the generosity that made it!
