October 2010 update #2
By Colette
My family runs a local chapter of Hugs Across America, a nonprofit organization that provides teddy bears to help comfort children in times of distress or disaster. We have 40 stuffed bears that we have collected ready to go to Kelly Elementary School. The teddies will be available to hand out for those seeking comfort and having a hard time dealing with the events on Friday. We also have 2 larger stuffed dogs for the 2 injured girls when they come back to school.
Carlsbad, CA … Shortly after noon on October 8, 2010, a lone gunman entered the campus of Kelly Elementary School and randomly fired shots at students on the playground during lunchtime recess. Two students were injured before the gunman was overtaken by three construction workers, assisted by two neighborhood residents, who detained him until police arrived. The students were air-lifted to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego; thankfully, their injuries are not life-threatening.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (CBS/KFMB)
A suspect was in custody after at least five shots were fired on a crowded playground at the Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad, California Friday, injuring at least two people. The gunshots were reported at 12:12 p.m. A man in his 30s, dressed in dark clothing, walked on campus carrying a .357 Magnum, an official said. At least five shots were reportedly fired before the suspect was tackled and taken into custody.
Two people were transported via Mercy Air to a local hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. The children shot were ages 6 yrs and 7 yrs.
Colette and Eric sent teddy bears to the school to comfort the children traumatized by the event.
Those teddies were held by the youngsters who had to witness in Court…and it meant a great deal to the kids to have their “hugs” with them. Thank you to Colette and Eric for their effort.

We were able to visit the childrens ward of Balboa Naval Hospital where several children’s eyes lit up with the bears as they faced a variety of medical issues. In addition, a local so cal girl after facing her 3rd chemo treatment lit up when she was given a bear as she watched her fellow soccer teammates in a game.
Chapter information
The family has started a Hugs Chapter with a very special birthday party for Lindsey. In stead of receiving gifts, she asked her friends to bring teddy bears for children in crisis in their local area. What a wonderful way to celebrate for a generous 9 year old!! We are delighted to have Morgan and Lindsey and their Hugs by the Sea join our mission.
