How we started

scotia_b1.jpgMy husband and I went to New York City with a group of friends for a weekend visit in March. Sunday morning found us trying to figure out what to do for the day–we decided to go to Ground Zero. It was a heart-wrenching sight. We decided to go across the street into St. Paul’s Chapel to show our respects. That’s where it happened!

I have been an avid teddy bear lover and collector most of my life. As it happens I have a tote bag with teddy bears all over it. My husband, being the good guy he is, was carrying it for me, amid much teasing from our friends. When we went into the chapel a lady came over and asked him where he got the bag. We started talking and she told me she wanted one because she was involved with an organization called Hugs Across America, and explained this wonderful program to me.

scotia_b2.jpgNow came my part. As she was telling me this, I started getting goose bumps. I had been wanting to do some kind of charity work, but didn’t know what. I knew I wanted it to involve kids, I knew I would like it to help servicemen and women somehow (this part, because my son had been in the Navy and I knew how hard it was for him to leave his wife and son behind when he was shipped out). Here was my answer–and I could include teddy bears, too! How perfect!!

And so, Chapter 20, Bearers of Hope, was born. We are in the beginning stages at this time, getting things organized and such.

What’s Happening Now

We have started our first fundraiser and are also collecting bears and donations from friends and family. At this time we are getting bears ready to give to the children of a National Guard unit in our area that is being sent to Iraq in the fall.
